“Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On But The Rent” by Gwen Guthrie (1986)

10 Year Old Me (1986): I love this song! The words are so funny!

Modern Day “Woke” Me (2017): Awful relationship politics. regressive gender politics. The narrator of the song is basically looking for a sugar daddy. Because if “nothing from nothing leaves uh-nothing”, then she ain’t got no job either.

Philosophical Me (2017): You don’t have to agree with the lyrical content of a song in order to enjoy it. Shit, you don’t have to agree with the lyrical content of a song to WRITE it. Gwen clearly didn’t. The resourceful Miss Guthrie cut her teeth as a background vocalist and songwriter before bubbling up in the New York club scene and finally exploding with this #1 R&B smash. She also wrote AND produced the song-by herself.

Me As I Finish Typing This: “Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On But The Rent” was, is and forever will be a jam.  I’ma play it loud and dance my ass off.
