Apparently, Thom Yorke doesn’t like “High And Dry”. What is with this guy and his best songs?
Anyway, don’t listen to Thom Yorke. “High And Dry” is one of my favorite Radiohead songs, and it’s from what I consider the second most essential Radiohead album, 1995’s The Bends. It’s certainly the song (and the album) that sits closest to the middle of Radiohead-as-commercial-alternative-rock-group and Radiohead-as-experimental-critical-favorite. Mainstream enough to be played on the radio, weird enough to not be played on Top 40 radio at the height of alt-rock’s crossover success.
It’s also got an excellent jazz-adjacent cover by Jamie Cullum.
