Part of the reason I love “Don’t Panic” as much as I do is because the song features heavily in Garden State, a movie I love dearly. Zach Braff picked the music for his movies (and Scrubs) with the passion of a true music fan. “Don’t Panic” captures the mixture of melancholy and optimism that’s become a hallmark of Braff’s film and TV work. For his part, Chris Martin’s early work was a pretty decent mixture of melancholy and optimism in and of itself. The “we live in a beautiful world” refrain sticks with me whenever I hear this song, whether I’m believing those words or questioning them.
