“Dancing In The Street” by Martha & The Vandellas (1964)

Some songs are so iconic that I can’t think of anything to say other than “this is a fucking awesome record.” Martha & The Vandellas’ call-to-party “Dancing In The Street” is one such song.

OK OK, I’ll say one other thing. “Dancing In The Street” is pure joy on 7” of vinyl. That’s it.

One more thing; and Marvin Gaye plays drums on it! I was going to give the Funk Brothers a shout and then was reminded of this fact!

OK, one final thing: the Bowie/Jagger cover only gets three stars from me. The video, on the other hand, is a five-star masterpiece.

NOT QUITE FIVE STARS…

“Dancefloor” (Tracey Thorn, 2018) : From the Everything But the Girl vocalists’s awesome solo album released earlier this year; Tracey expresses the need to throw back to her youth and be carefree on the dance floor. Even as she shouts out the titles of her favorite dance classics like “Shame”, “Let The Music Play” and “Golden Years”, there’s a tinge of sadness in her voice.
