Wow-I get to write about a Christmas song less than ten days before spring begins! And I get to continue writing about it two days after the beginning of spring while there’s still snow on the ground here in New York!
“Christmas In Hollis” is certainly the best holiday-related rap song ever. It’s festive, it’s catchy and it’s not corn…OK, it is pretty corny. I mean, Run is rapping about reindeer and there’s the “frosty the snowman” sleigh-bell breakdown. So I guess what I’m saying is that it’s good enough to transcend its corniness. A definite testament to how powerful Run, D and Jay were at their peaks.
“It’s Christmastime in Hollis, Queens/Mom’s cooking chicken and collard greens” might be one of the most recognized rap couplets of all time, too.
Also want to submit a vote for the first Very Special Christmas album being the best multi-artist holiday album ever. Sorry, Phil Spector.
