Writing about this song seems quite apropos today.
Bernard Sumner channels the spirit of Ian Curtis (the band’s former lead singer, back when they were Joy Division. Curtis hanged himself in 1980). Sumner and the rest of the band then patched together a mix of the futuristic sci-fi background Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte put together for Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, add a little Nile Rodgers chicken scratch guitar, and there you have it: “Blue Monday”.
Part of a long-standing tradition of amazing dance songs with dark fucking lyrics.
