“Betcha Never” by Vanessa Williams (1994)

This Babyface-composed cut from Vanessa’s The Sweetest Days album finds the former Miss America playing romantic chess with a cheating paramour. Vanessa’s checkmate move is revealing to her lying partner that she has also found herself another lover and “we’re going away for the rest of your life.” ICE COLD. Vanessa’s delivery is also frosty in all the best ways. She’s gotten over whatever hurt she was feeling by her lover’s betrayal, and this song is essentially a sweetly vocalized “fuck you.”

‘Face was on his way to Autopilot by the time this song was released, but “Betcha Never” finds the writer/producer/background vocalist at his best. The airy background and flamenco-ish guitar brings Sting’s “Fragile” to mind.
