“Behind The Groove” by Teena Marie (1980)

Lady T was only on album number two when “Behind The Groove” became a minor hit, but all of the elements that made her her were already in place. Funky bottom? Yes. Soulful Vox? Yes. Subtle Latin and jazz flavoring? Yes and yes. Weird semi-mystical lyrics about Xanadu being behind the groove? Uh huh. All set to a musical background that’s perfect for roller skating.

Looks like Teena beat Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly to the Xanadu train by about six months, so it’s hard to tell whether that particular name drop (or celestial being drop?) was clever marketing on Teena and Motown’s part, or random coincidence. I guess we’ll never know.
