Words are failing me here, so I’ll keep this one simple.

“All Through The Night” is beautifully arranged and powerfully sung. Cyndi Lauper hasn’t always chosen the best or most interesting material, but this (and its parent album’s other key ballad, which is one of my fifty or so favorite songs ever) is a perfect match of singer and song. It’s a comforting sentiment, and the twinkling synthesizers that provide most of the instrumentation on “All Through The Night” give it a lullaby-like flavor. As does Cyndi’s singing, which projects a certain innocence.

Best part: towards the end when Cyndi raises an octave into a wordless coo, and the keyboard melody gets rearranged slightly. It almost sounds like a mistake, even though it probably isn’t and if it actually is, how perfect is that?

Also, Rob Hyman’s support vocals in the chorus–echoes of that other ballad that will come up much, much later.
